TRINIDAD

         
Trinidad City has five main squares and four churches date from the 18th and 19th centuries the whole city, cobbled streets and tiled roofs, is a national monument and since 1988 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1797 there were 56 sugar mills and 12 000 slaves. Imported to work in the sugar cane fields. Industrial Revolution and the increase in sugar grown in Europe, in the second half of the 19th century Trinidad went into decline.

Other museums you can visiting is "Museo de Arqueología Guamuhaya" on street Simón Bolívar 457, Plaza Mayor with a view of developments from pre-Columbian post. "Museo de Arquitectura Colonial" on street Desengaño 83, exhibits architecture of Trinidad of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Entertainment in Trinidad:
Just block from the church is the "Casa de la Trova", entrance on Calle Márquez. open weekend lunchtimes and evenings, entry US$1 has excellent live Cuban music in an open air with a warm atmosphere. Another bar " La Canchanchara", C Villena 70, with live traditional music open 9am to 7pm, Cuban special cocktails, pots created out of rum, sugar, honey and lemon, no food, The "Cueva" disco at night recommended, dance mambo and Cuban salsa.

City romantic atmosphere is mixed with slavery past.

               
Location, 106 kilometers south of Santa Clara and about 90 km from Cienfuegos, Trinidad is a relic of the early days of the Spanish colony. Diego Velázquez, base for expeditions into the "New World", founded Trinidad in1514. Cortés set out from here for Mexico in 1518, but despite this early start it remained haven for smugglers until the late 18th century. Smugglers brought slaves and gold from British Jamaica, but all this changed in the early 19th century when a slave revolt in Haiti caused French planters to flee to Trinidad.



" Plaza Mayor" is the center of the town.The cathedral,"Iglesia Parroquial de la Santísima Trinidad", built between 1817 and 1892, is the largest church in Cuba. The "Museo Romántico", located on Calle Hernández 52, next to the church has excellent exhibition of romantic-style porcelain, glass, paintings and ornate furniture, which belonged to the Conde de Brunet family, dating from 1830-1860. The museum "Municipal de Historia" is on street Simón Bolívar 423, an attractive building but not much interesting displays, from the tower a good view of Trinidad.


The Ancón beach has two resorts, the bigest is three strars hotel " Grand Caribe Ancon". The beach is lovely, pure white sand and clean turquoise water, just eight kilometers from Trinidad. You can hire a private car for about US$10 from Trinidad to Playa Ancón via La Boca, bar "Rapido" is on the way to the beach.
