Hunting at El Indio
El Indio is a place near Santiago de Cuba that offers hunting for duck, dove and quail. The specialty is hunting for White Crowned Pigeon starting on July 1 of each year. In the past this place has been used only by Cuban bigwigs and their former Russian friends. Now it is available to the Americans. Take advantage. This facility is a rustic lodge serving as a hunting lodge, eco center and place for horseback riding. Here the main attraction is for the White Crowned Pigeon starting the first of July and later for duck, dove and quail. All of this located in what is known as the Boconao Biosphere Reserve. Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city in Cuba is nearby as is San Juan Hill, where former President Teddy Roosevelt made his famous charge up San Juan Hill. UNESCO is trying to preserve this area and it's more than 6,000 types of plants, 800 insects, 20 kinds of reptiles, 60 kinds of birds and 19 types of mammals. There is a lot more here to explore than just hunting. Expect to pay $2100 for a 7 night / 5 day hunting trip plus the cost of transportation to get there. Hunting license is $25, shot gun rentals (both 12 and 20 gauge) are $10 per day and shot gun shells are $10 per box. We first visited El Indio in 1995. 512-347-8952 9-5 Monday thru Friday or 512-413-3968 after hours and on weekends |
