Governor hopes for progress on US-Cuba ties

Posted Sat Aug 29, 2009 6:11pm AEST

A prominent American politician has ended a week-long visit to Cuba with an appeal to President Barack Obama to do more to improve relations with the Communist island.

The Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, says he is confident progress can be made.

But he has stressed it will take time to resolve fundamental problems, such as the US trade embargo and the issue of Cuban political prisoners.

"There is a good atmosphere," he said. "It's the best atmosphere I've seen in many years for an improvement of relationship.

"What is needed is concrete steps from both sides. It's very important that we build more confidence in each other before we tackle the bold divisive issues."
