BIRDSONG TRAVEL

.

The late Jacques Cousteau once said that he saw more fish on Cuban reefs than anywhere else in the world. Cuba is a wonderful destination for scuba divers. It has a floating hotel, live aboard dive ships and hotels dedicated to scuba divers. We can take you to all of Cuba's great dive sites including: Maria la Gorda, the Island of Youth, Bay of Pigs, Cayo Largo, Cayo Levisa, Varadero, Rancho Luna, Santa Lucia, Guardalavaca, Santiago de Cuba, Jardines de la Riena and Cayo Coco. We made our first dives in Cuba more than 24 years ago.

We helped the Cubans set up a number of their dive sites. We think we know the secrets to Cuba's safest and best diving destinations.

The sport of scuba diving depends very largely upon those who participate in the sport to preserve and conserve the very environment upon which their sport depends. The Cubans are among the most environmentally conscious people on earth.

Cuba is very concerned about the safety of the scuba divers and they never dive with more than 5 scuba divers per dive master. There are currently 10 recompression chambers in Cuba with highly qualified doctors manning them at all times. The safety record for diving in Cuba is probably unmatched at any other destination in the world.

Currently there are more than 30 dive sites in Cuba. We like to think that we know where the best ones are....we helped to start them.

Prices can range from $3500 for a week at the Last Paradise Keys (Jardines de la Reina), to paying as little as $25 for a dive in some places if you have most of your own equipment.  Prices as some of the more famous dive sites like the Island of Youth or Maria la Gorda might average $100 to $150 per person each day including accommodations, three meals and at least two dives per day.

Expect to pay around $365 to get certified as a diver in Cuba.  Resort courses for beginners start at about $60.

Some of the resorts are:

Island of Youth....Dive center is the Colony Hotel.  Most diving is done from Pirates Point where there are about 56 different dive sites.  The hotel has 77 rooms and about 25 suites.  The area is protected and diving is almost a 365 day per year guarantee.  Winter water temperatures average about 75 degrees and summer averages about 82 degrees.

Maria La Gorda....Is located on the western tip of Cuba.  It a quiet, very beautiful site and the diving is described as some of the best in all of Cuba.  Diving goes on all year around with winter water temperatures averaging 78 degrees and summer water temperatures at 82 degrees.  Maria La Gorda is best known for it's great coral formations, sponges and gorgonians.  The remnants of Spanish galleons are found in this area. Some of Cuba's top diving locations

Gardens of the Queen

(Jardines de la Reina)

Garden of the Queens

Named the Queen's Gardens by Christopher Columbus, the Jardines de la Reina is a pristine chain of islands (Americans called it the Last Paradise Keys, very similar in nature to the Florida Keys in the USA. The island system runs more than one hundred miles back to the northwest, from Cuba's south-eastern coast. Most of the area for diving is forty to fifty miles offshore and has been designated as a Cuban National Park.  As such, there is no commercial fishing in this exclusive area, which covers nearly eighty miles. There are no civilians living on any of the islands in the National Park, where the rather new Avalon's operation is located. This is a huge expanse of saltwater wilderness, perhaps the last place like this left in the world today. With Cuba's continued protection it should remain a treasure forever.

This destination for fishermen and scuba divers was originally opened for us in 1980.  There was a floating hotel known as the Flotana.  When the US placed travel restrictions on American in My of 1982, the Cubans tried to tow the Flotana around to the north side of the Island....in the process it was damaged beyond repair.

For a scuba diving adventure you will never forget....try the Garden of the Queens.

There are more than 50 different dive sites in the Garden of the Queens
