When Jimmy Carter removed the travel restrictions to Cuba, Dan immediately wrote a letter to Fidel Castro, explaining that he wanted to bring fishermen to Treasure Lake in Cuba.  A lot of fishermen believed the next “world record” bass would come from Treasure Lake.

Some time passed and Dan picked up the phone in his office one day, and, lo and behold, it was a call from Cuba.  It wasn’t Fidel Castro, but it was a high ranking official.  He asked Dan if he could bring 24 fishermen to Cuba on a specific date.  At first, Dan wasn’t sure he could get that many people to go to Cuba, since this was in the Cold War era, but once he got started trying to find fishermen that wanted to go to Cuba, he was able to fill all 24 slots on the first day.  The saga began….

From the first trip to Treasure Lake, he fell in love with the Cuban people and wanted to do whatever he could for them.  He never did it for the money.  He truly loved it and wanted to help the Cuban people.  Dan was a good man that wanted to help the needy.

Talking to a customer on the phone, usually the first thing he would tell them was how delightful the Cuban people are.  He would say, “You’ll just want to put them in your suitcase and bring them home with you.

The fishermen were always encouraged to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba to help the Cuban people.  They were very generous with their donations.

Dan also had a love for car racing.  His parents were divorced at a young age, but his father always brought him and his sister to the car races around the area.  He watched car racing up to the very end.

He still kept in touch with friends he grew up with.  He went to his 50th Class Reunion in August, 2006.  Betty didn’t think he was really well enough to go, but Dan wanted to go so badly, they went anyway.  He enjoyed every minute of it.  There were 250 people at this reunion and he visited with as many of them as he possible could, being one of the very last to leave.

Dan started writing a book many years ago, but he never finished it because, he said, “It hasn’t ended yet”.  He gave it to a long time friend who has a publisher.  The publisher wants to publish the book after the travel restrictions are lifted.  Hopefully, this day will come sooner than later.

Dan Snow made a difference.  He spent endless hours working and fighting for Americans’ right to travel.  He dedicated much of his life to this purpose.  He sent countless letters to congressmen, senators and the president.  He fought all the way to the Supreme Court.  As a marine, he would have fought an enemy to prevent them from taking away our freedoms.  But, he also believed your should stand up to your own government when you think your freedoms have been taken away based on lies.

Dan Snow truly lived a “purpose driven life”.
